(02名古屋市立大学薬学部 /英語/改) Normal cells divide, replicate themselves, and die off millions of times over the course of a life. In other words, cells normally divide only to produce more cells as the body needs them. This process is controlled in part by “oncogenes” -----genes that direct cell growth----- and by tumor-suppressor genes, which are in charge of cell death. When control by these genes is lost, the cell starts dividing and spreading very rapidly, resulting in cancer. A new type of cancer drug candidate has recently appeared as a harbinger of the future of cancer treatment. It does not kill tumors----- it stops them from growing. That’s important, because a single tumor is not usually deadly. What kills the patients is its ability to produce more tumors throughout the body. Oncologists are hopeful that, in an ideal future, they will analyze a patient’s tumor to determine what cellular mechanisms are driving the cancer’s grown. Then, they can choose a drug designed to shut it down. The disease would become a chronic and treatable condition, much like diabetes. Patients could go on maintenance by receiving an intravenous does of the above type of cancer drug once every four or five weeks, possibly for years. “The idea of a cure may be overrated”, says Dr. Harold Varmus, president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. “I would be quite content with just keeping the cancer under control. Patients can live long and healthy lives with a stable disease.” The watchword now in cancer treatment is not ( ア ) but ( イ ).
